The Gauntlet
2019
Copper, nickel, brass
7.5" x 4"

The body of work is from a project layout I received as an undergrad. The work had to showcase a repeating form that could be worn and allow room for movement. I had based this body of work on a gauntlet that is often paired with suits of armor worn by knights, but I wanted it to have the sturdy appearance that could be found in boxing gloves and how they protected the hand. The domed shapes are forged copper that has been coated in liver of sulphur. The railroad arms are made of brass cut and filed to specific shapes and riveted each other and the piece with brass tube rivets. The rings are made from nickel forged and filed into a shape that mimics the railroad arms. The chain is brass added better secure the gauntlet across the palm of the hand like a boxers glove but also to invoke the opulence of the Renaissance period in which knights actually wore suits of armor.
